November 2020 Note…

We have had above seasonal temperatures so far this year which we have been very appreciative of. However, this warm weather will not last forever! As the mercury dips below freezing it will be very important for students to come prepared to be warm when they have gym class because we will be outside as long as it is safe to be.

In October grades 4-9 talked about what can make up a healthy lifestyle and started a poster project. In November we will be learning what a S.M.A.R.T goal is and setting some fitness ones for ourselves. We will be tracking our progress to achieving them over the course of the school year. We will also be doing some baseline fitness assessments to help us set meaningful goals. We will continue to try new games like volley baseball… the grade sevens played this in costumes which added to the fun!

October 2021 Note…

The primary class has been enjoying the nice fall weather. We had a great time visiting Noggins and picking apples this month! The kids were so excited and learned about how apples grow and when to pick them!

We are looking forward to representing our Orange shirts on Truth and Reconciliation day! Please share stories and information with your children about residential school survivors in your family.  Students are excited to see the leaves changing colours and the many signs of fall. They are looking forward to exploring outdoors before the weather gets to cold.

We hope everyone has a wonderful Treaty Day and Thanksgiving!

Kwe,

Etek tekik. Fall is here. It’s getting cold.  Elementary students had a great time going Apple Picking at Noggins Farm.  We are so happy to be able to go on field trips once again.  Students are continuing to wear masks in common areas, screen for Covid symptoms, have their temperatures taken and sanitizing their hands regularly

On September 30th we planned to celebrate the first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation by coming together safely with students of  Shubenacadie Elementary for outdoor cultural activities.  Due to the rain we have postponed our plans to Wednesday, October 6th.  Our staff and Junior high students will lead cultural activities.   These activities will build pride in who we are as Mi’kmaq people and also strengthen relationships to build reconciliation by teaching about the Mi’kmaq.

Each morning we start our day with the morning announcement which includes our land acknowledgment, an inspirational quote, Mi’kmaq words/phrases of the day and the Mi’kmaq honour song sung by primary to grade 3 students. October is Mi’kmaq history month. At LSK we use the Nova Scotia Treaty Education Framework for age appropriate teachings of residential schools and treaties throughout the year, not only in October.

October 14 we will celebrate Nitapday by learning and modelling kindness and friendship. Kindness builds stronger relationships and connections. On October 15th, staff will participate in a Professional Development workshop hosted by Dr. Jody Carrington.  Other MK schools will also be able to experience this workshop virtually.   Dr. Jody Carrington will discuss trauma, resilience, connections and relationships.  We are continuing to focus on strengthening relationships with each other, our students and our community.    Please feel free to reach out to our staff with any concerns you may have, as we are here to support you.

This month’s seven sacred teachings we are focusing on is Mikitelsulti, courage or bravery.  Bravery is doing something that frightens you.  It is doing something with your whole heart when you cannot predict the outcome.  Everytime we choose courage, we make everyone around us a little better and the world a little braver.   We are bravest when we are connected with others.

Last year we sold Nourish Your Roots Boxes and shared them with elders in our community.  Like last year,  you can order boxes online at https://shop.nourishns.ca  Boxes of fruits and vegetables that are purchased can be picked up at the Community Center on Wednesday, October 27th from 2:15pm-5:45 pm.   Go to https://shop.nourishns.ca to place your order for a box of fruit and vegetables.  Proceeds of sales go to our gardening program if you select our school when you buy a Nourish Your Roots box online.

Thanksgiving is October 11th and a day in which we give thanks for all we have and the people we have in our lives. It is a day we show our gratitude and we celebrate with a large meal. Thanksgiving was originally a day to give thanks for the harvest season and because Canada is more northern, we celebrate it before our southern neighbours, the United States.

Keep your eyes and ears open for our upcoming outdoor Fall Fair at LSK. We look forward to seeing our community on the LSK school grounds. To learn more about our activities, events and projects stay tuned to our website at www.lskschool.ca

Hello there everyone! Hard to believe one month is now gone and only nine months left.  But who is counting.  So far, so good.

The learning centre is once again accommodating students from grade seven to grade twelve.  Teachers and students have been great and have shown confidence in the learning centre and its staff.  This year the Learning Centre is also offering Tourism for a couple of students who need the course.  This just started and the students have been learning about Nova Scotia and the importance of its Tourism industry.

Well, that’s it for me.
Cheers!  Mr. Mac

October 2021 Note…

Each month I will be sharing information on a different strategy I will be using here at the school to help the students. For October it will be about Positive reinforcement.

Positive reinforcement is a type of behavior management that focuses on rewarding what is done well by students. It is used to encourage students to perform tasks more accurately. In this case, positive does not mean “good”, it actually means “adding to”. So from a behavioral standpoint positive reinforcement is adding something to make the behavior reoccur in the future.

Positive reinforcement has shown to really help those with Autism, ADHD, or any other child who has difficulties in school or at home. When we reward these individuals for following a given direction, even the simplest direction such as clapping your hands, we create more opportunities for them to appropriately respond or behave and not be stigmatized by their peers.

By having reinforcers (fancy behavioral term for rewards) readily available for desirable behaviors, we can begin properly implementing positive reinforcement to promote accuracy and consistency in the students’ choices.

Kwe’/Hi,

My main responsibility as resource support is to work collaboratively with classroom teachers, parents, administration and other service providers to assist in program planning to meet student needs. In September I have been in the process of completing assessments and reviewing Individual Education plans (IEP’s) to support students and their needs. I have also been busy administering the Test of Preschool Literacy (TOPEL) to the Primary students for the Martin Family Initiative (MFI).

During the month of October I will be scheduling and attending program planning meetings. I will also be administering student assessments based on the Program planning meetings and beginning to support students in their reading on a daily basis. I would encourage parents/guardians to communicate with their child’s classroom teacher any concerns they may have pertaining to their child’s school success. Parents/Guardians and classroom teachers can refer a child for program planning to assist in identifying the child’s strengths and needs.

If you have any questions or concerns pertaining to the program planning process or elementary resource, please feel free to contact me at the school.

Wela’lin/Thank you,
Ms. Leslie Paul
